Writing Prompt #205

Write a 250-word description of a character named Seth Alary, a 23-year-old male who is fearful of disapproval and has a strong need to please others.

He was tall, too thin, with hair so brittle and fair it was almost missing. He enjoyed medieval stories, the kind with small print and thick binding, and he was careful to keep them stashed in a crate in the hall. They weren’t, after all, the kind of thing one left lying about to provoke conversation.
He’d spent the weekend cleaning the apartment in preparation for his sister’s arrival. She was bringing her boyfriend and the thought made Seth’s skin itch, so he made certain to do away with anything that might be considered questionable. The Gold Bond powder in the cabinet, any frayed socks that might go astray and be seen. He bought a new toothbrush and comb to replace the ones that looked too used.
The day his guests were to arrive he intended to leave work early. It wasn’t much of a change in his schedule, and he knew he wouldn’t be missed – stock boys, as a rule, are just background until they get behind in their work – however, his supervisor Nia had told him just that morning about how she’d been late getting her kids to school and she had so much stress she could scream. Hearing that, he decided Stacy and her boyfriend could just let themselves in while he finished up at work. He only hoped the towel he’d left out this morning wasn’t on the floor.
What was he thinking anyway, agreeing to let them stay? He wouldn’t get any sleep, what if they needed something he didn’t have, oh god what if they found that hemorrhoid medication from last year?
